I Feel Like Such a Girl

So on a whim after watching one of the newer “there’s an app for that” iPhone commercials.  In it there was an app that let you create outfits by clicking through different clothes which seemed pretty cool, so I found the free version of that and the free version of just about any fashion related app I could get.  I wanted something to help me come up with cool looks for all my characters, plus ways to generate lots of background characters.  None that I found worked particularly well for that, as most of them were pretty shit even for what there designed for, to help people find out about cool fashion stuff and buy clothes.

One app, which i sorta accidentally purchased, was pretty interesting.  It was a virtual closet app.  So you would take pictures of your clothes, and then you could use this app to manage all your outfits and stuff.  Its a pretty nifty idea and because I’ve started to begin taking a little bit of effort into my wardrobe potentially useful.

But it gave me more interesting ideas for a website me and nikki have kept threatening to each other to build.  This journal is mostly just written to put a stake in the ground, so we can start working on its design in a slightly  more productive way.  What we want to build is an internet fashion site that doesn’t suck.  Some how fashion sites are the place that the internet has forgotten.  They are ugly, impossible to navigate or set back in web design sense at least 8 years.  which is weird for a category of site that should care most about the way they look, right?

What I would like to do for a fashion site is to rethink the idea of a fashion site online.  I would like to start with a really in-depth look into the history of fashion, and compare the fashion styles to what was going on at the time to drive people to dress like that.  Stuff like this: http://www.mentalfloss.com/blogs/archives/32657 .  From there I’d like to get virtual closet concepts added in, where people could share there outfits and style sense. the obvious way to monetize would be to get affiliate links with all the clothing manufacturers and then inventive people to make outfits and then sell them.  The one thing I know the site WON’T be is a gossip site, or talk about runway models and stuff. that stuff is kinda boring, and there is enough people covering that, and that way lies madness.  I don’t want to end up with a myopic veiw of the world where I view everything through the lens of clothes.

  • Ugh, yes. There was like this fat guy on tv critizing outfitts of celebrities at some award show while being both fat, having hideous stringy yellow hair and wearing a gold fucking tux. I only watched because it was like 2 minutes before House but it was torture because this guy was so hideous and yet did not slow down for a second on his insulting of people and the show was like ooh burned minor celebrity.

  • Oh wtf is with those clothes? Whoever dressed her should be fired. Leggings can be pretty sexy but you gotta have the right clothes to pull those off, and its not hippy headbands and shoes that don't match. There was a girl at the restaurant yesterday that had these fugly green leggings. Can we all agree that that color should not be worn as pants ever. I mostly mean like this color green http://s3.amazonaws.com/weardrobe1/pictures/001... vs. like an olive green which is at least not a barfy color. but i never see girls wear olive greens its always that barfy bluegreen that always is gross looking.

  • Oh yeah also, I'll be setting up a Github account this weekend where we can begin sharing code for this project as we half assedly build it, even if its the TDD style of build it which is put stuff in text files saying when this class is built correctly you'll know because it will give this for output, and doesn't actually work because its just words saying this should work like x.

    I'll probably also set up a second repository where we can put a photo gallery software seeing as your plan to build it in class kinda failed. I assume you'd want to rebuild in php even if the java client is most of what you want, if only for open sourcing it, without being laughed at. XD Plus I think we may be able to use the photo stuff as part of the core to our fashion site, cause it'll need pics too. depends I guess, I don't know how you want the photo gallery to work it may be more work to bridge them than to just rebuild the wheel.

    You can make a free account here and then I can share code with you when I get the sub (free accounts can only do open source and I'd rather keep it private until its more ready) its also got lots of refrence on git which is the software repositary system that everyone in open source is moving to atm because its so much more awesome then the things that came out before.

    No, it's sorta style in which bright clashing colours = awesome. I think all leggings are stupid anyway.
  • horray. also other greens still would work for being bright and clashing colors. it doesn't really clash if your other clothes use the same ugly green though. its just ugly. I'm not suprised you don't like leggings, because you are anti-sexy clothes nikki. Though leggings only even work on girls that have good enough legs to get away without them.
  • I was tempted to give kira leggings and some sorta dress that works with leggings cause I think that fits kira, but I can't remember why I decided against it.
  • Wait what? its ugly on purpose? Is that what you are saying? Girls buy those ugly green/blue things even though they know they make them look ugly and wearing the same exact leggings in another color would make them look good? I mean I understand why people wear sweatpants, thats an yeah I look ugly but they are being worn for comfort or whatever. But to wear niceish clothes with the intent of looking ugly? That's like even more crazy then I gave you ladies credit for. I can at least understand the fail'd logic of sweatpants but you'll have to explain this one to me I think.

    Which is another reason to build this site to teach people about this stuff. XD
